Our School

Acle Academy is a mixed, comprehensive school for pupils between the ages of 11 and 16.  The school originally opened as a secondary modern in 1959, serving the village of Acle and others close by. It was built with accommodation for just 300 pupils. In 1978 the school became comprehensive as part of a reorganisation of education within the county. In 1992 the school became grant maintained and self-governing. With the change in national government we chose to adopt foundation status in 1999.  We continue to enjoy good relationships with the Local Authority and liaise with them on areas of mutual interest and concern.  In September 2003, the school was awarded specialist status in science and mathematics and became Acle Specialist Science High School with a change in logo and uniform to match the new identity.  Most recently, in September 2012, the school has taken advantage of the opportunity to have direct control over our budget and curriculum and our latest "incarnation" brings with it a change of name to "Acle Academy".

Since its opening in 1959, the school’s buildings have been extended and updated to reflect the increasing need for specialist teaching areas and the substantial growth in pupil numbers.  We have recently completed a number of small building projects to improve facilities and to help deliver new courses more effectively.

Our core values are CARE, CHALLENGE and ENRICHMENT.

We are dedicated to creating a culture which helps prepare students not just for exam results, but for lifelong learning. To thrive in the 21st century, it is not enough to leave school with a clutch of examination certificates. Students need to have learnt how to be tenacious and resourceful, imaginative and logical, self-disciplined and self-aware, collaborative and inquisitive.

At Acle Academy, we believe that the core purpose of education is to prepare young people for life after school; helping them to build up the mental, emotional, social and strategic resources to enjoy challenge and cope well with uncertainty and complexity. We believe that this purpose for education is valuable for all young people and involves helping them to discover the things that they would really love to be great at, and strengthening their will and skill to pursue them. We also believe that confidence, capability and passion can be developed in all students irrespective of their starting points.  Real world intelligence is not something we are born with, we can all develop the skills needed to succeed with the right mind set. At Acle Academy we will inspire every young person and nurture their potential in order to develop the leaders of tomorrow.

Our curriculum is regularly reviewed and we aim to be innovative and supportive of our learners, particularly those with additional needs and we are proud of our strong international and community partnerships.

The staff offer a generous extra-curricular programme built on strong partnerships and collaboration with a range of providers and organisations. We have a rich and varied calendar of sport, science and arts based activities and an interesting range of lectures, courses and workshops for adults.

Student participation and leadership are vital to the health of the school. We need students to be active contributors and we have lively Year Councils and a Student Council led by our senior prefects.

Engaging parents and carers and keeping them informed of student progress is vital if we are to give consistent messages to young people about our values and raising aspirations. Our regular newsletter ‘High Notes’ provides an interesting survey of everything that is happening in our busy school community.

There is a good deal of uncertainty about education policy and funding but with our history of innovation and change we feel confident that we can continue to provide an excellent education into the twenty first century.
