English

English teaching is delivered by a committed team of innovative staff over 6 one hour lessons per fortnight in 6 dedicated classrooms. A library lesson is also taught to Year 7s by the school librarian, Mrs Ward using Accelerated Reader. Rooted in Reading is a program followed by Years 8 and 9 in their fortnightly library lesson.

In Years 7 to 9, all students follow a comprehensive, engaging course consisting of the study of contemporary and classic fiction (such as “ Private Peaceful”, “Abomination”, “Stone Cold”, “Once” and “Lord of the Flies”), poetry, plays, non-fiction as well as a varied diet of speaking and listening activities: engaging in individual presentations, group discussions and role plays.  We study authors such as Roald Dahl alongside traditional Shakespeare throughout Key Stage Three with “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” and “Macbeth”. Media texts such as “Titanic” are also used to enhance our study of language and format.

The GCSE English courses studied at Acle Academy are WJEC English Language and English Literature which are two year courses of study culminating in a number of examinations.

GCSE English Language tests students’ ability to read and respond to both prose and non-fiction, demonstrating skills of comprehension and inference. It also requires students to write both fiction and non-fiction with accuracy and imagination.

GCSE English Literature tests students’ ability to analyse challenging literary heritage texts such as “Romeo and Juliet”, “War of the Worlds” and “An Inspector Calls. Students must also study an anthology of classic British poetry and be able to analyse contemporary poetry.
